Black Ops was my first long-term exposure to the COD franchise. I quickly got up to speed that the lackluster single-player campaign mode was offset by the amazing online multiplayer modes. Learning that the next COD, Modern Warfare 3, would not be made by the same developer, Treyarch, had me a little skeptical as my favorite feature, zombies would not be in this year’s game. But Infinity Ward has an excellent reputation, handling Activision’s cash cow game.

(Before I get too deep in this review, I am required to state, “that Activision hooked me up with free copy of the game for this review.” Yes, I HAD to say that per the legal/FTC full disclosure notice that was included with my copy. Whatever.)

If you are buying this game simply for the campaign and have played the other Modern Warfare games religiously, you will be disappointed. MW1 and MW2 were incredibly unique, and genuinely added to the campaign experience. This version simply uses the same formula and splices in game-play highlights from the previous games. The campaign also had a Black-Ops feel of simply running and gunning through the same types of levels you have done before. Doesn’t matter if you are on a submarine, or shooting your way through Paris, it all feels like the same game you’ve played before. The campaign ended in six hours on normal, and I felt myself just wanting to get to the end so I could do something else, rather than full sense of accomplishment. (Well at least Xbox gave me an achievement for doing it.)

That being said, most people buying this game, got it for online multiplayer. This year’s game feels very intuitive with the controls and provide countless hours of leveling up your character and weapons. Multiplayer is nice, but again, it is familiar and despite the new killstreaks, (The MOAB (Mother of All Bombs) and Juggernaut Suit are easily the best) will favor those who spend countless hours playing and memorizing the maps. The saving grace and fresh component to the game is the new Spec-Ops mode. Grab one of the homies play through the scenario missions. These missions really do shine amidst a lackluster campaign-multiplayer experience. For COD players going through zombies withdrawal, Survival mode is a good substitute. The goal: survive wave after wave of attacking troops, dogs, riot geared up cops, and C-4 strapped terrorists. Only complaint, is that there are too few levels.

Overall, you are paying $60 for a MW2 map-pack, another campaign, and extra Spec-Ops missions. Nothing is new but  people would gladly shell out the money for a chance to play more Call of Duty. Buy this game if you like online play. Split-screen co-op may be enough for others to purchase.

Crysis 2 hit stores yesterday and with it came an extended tv spot featuring an extra verse from B.o.B and more game footage. Check it out below:

Starting on March 11th, gamers can enter to win a once in a lifetime chance to appear in Resistance 3. Thankfully, you won’t actually have to battle against the Chimera but your likeness can appear in the upcoming PS3 exclusive. The grand prize winner will also get a chance to meet the Insomniac Games development team and get to play it before its released in September.

In order to win fans must visit http://us.playstation.com/resistance3getinthegame and upload a photo of themselves in the middle of a Resistance style battle (or looking like they have just survived one). Of course the more props they use the better.

THQ has released the two latest additions to the WWE All Stars roster via the games new trailer. Of course Hulk Hogan is featured but the big surprise is how much the enigmatic Ultimate Warrior is spotlighted. He and WWE boss Vince McMahon must have squashed their long running beef.  Expect the other eight legends to be announced before the game launches on 3/29.

Comic book nerds and videogame geeks rejoice! Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is almost here. A decade after the masses were strung out on hyper combos and triple tag team action, we’re within arms length of touching a product that is sure to make our jaws lock and hands shake with ferocity. At first glance the look of the characters in MVC3 are obviously updated and more visually enhanced than it’s predecessor, but the gameplay and overall feel are as smooth and fun as we remember them.  Combo hits, hyper combos and tag-team hyper combos are still as simple as Paris Hilton’s life. Things can actually be made easier when put on simple mode where special moves and hyper combos can be preformed with the single push of a button. Literally.

Expect some of the regulars and favorites to come back. Ryu, Wolverine, Chun-Li and Spiderman all return to fight alongside –and against each other– for the greater good. But expect some new faces as well. Chris Redfield (Resident Evil), Sir Arthur (Ghosts N Goblins), and Super Skrull (Fantastic Four) are just a few of the new characters that are all poised to make their MVC debut.  And don’t worry about beating the game in various ways with incredibly detailed methods to unlock secret characters. Just earn game points with every fight and post bail for whomever you wish to unlock. Oh, and by the way, also making a debut is the final boss who’s sure to make comicbook nerds and videogame geeks pants just a little bit tighter.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 hits stores for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on February 15^th .–Omar Mazariego

The Super Bowl is right around the corner and that means its Madden Bowl time. Today EA Sports announced that the tournament will be aired on espn3.com for the first time.

Teams this year include representatives from 2010 champions, the New Orleans Saints (Drew Brees, Reggie Bush, Chase Daniel), the disappointing hometown Cowboys (Miles Austin, Jason Witten, DeMarcus Ware), the Jacksonville Jags (Maurice Jones-Drew, Kirk Morrison, Marcedes Lewis) and former Madden Bowl and NFL standouts Patrick Willis, Dwight Freeney and Willis McGehee. Not sure who is going to win but it will definitely be more competitive than the Pro Bowl was. Sheesh.

Madden Bowl XVII will feature performances by Big Boi and Cee-Lo and it all goes down on February 3rd in Grapevine, TX. If you don’t have the paper to head to Dallas and make Jerry Jones an even richer man you can catch all the festivities on espn3.com later that night at 9pm ET.

The Bulletstorm demo (Xbox Live and PlayStation Network) shows the Echo mode in which players traverse a collapsed building on the deadly paradise planet Stygia as ex-Dead Echo leader Grayson Hunt. Players will utilize the Skillshot system to rack up points using an arsenal of powerful weapons, from a futuristic assault rifle called the Peace Maker Carbine, to the Flail Gun, which fires two grenades linked by a chain, and the Screamer, a powerful revolver that turns enemies into human fireworks.

Players can compete against their friends pulling off up to 45 Skillshots in one of the most over the top shooters to come to market.  The Bulletstorm demo also allows players to unlock platform-specific upgrades to use in the game’s Anarchy mode, from the Crimson Leash to Stealth Armor, when they purchase the full game.

Bulletstorm will be released on 2/22.

2K Sports announced the release date and player roster for one of our favorite sports games, Top Spin 4. The latest iteration of the game–which got a lot of run with non tennis fans–will be released on March 18th.
