Wii Sports Resort is, at its core, a tech demo to showcase the capabilities of their newest peripheral add-on, the Wii MotionPlus (included in every game.) Much like the pack-in of the original Wii Sports, Resort offers simple pick-up and play mini-games that are more likely to appeal to casual, stay at home moms than the hardcore MMORPG crowd.

Gone from the Wii Sports are baseball, boxing, and tennis (replaced for some by a not as fun table tennis). However favorites bowling and golf return with nine other games including cycling, Frisbee, swordplay, wake boarding, and the addictive basketball. Similar to Wii Fit, you start out with level one versions of mini-games then meet certain goals or points levels, and you’re given one, or in some cases, an additional two new versions of these mini-games to play –24 in all. Some of the new games are hits (air Sports and Frisbee) while others clearly miss (archery and canoeing).

The attended purpose seems to be to showoff the new 1:1 ratio controls of the MotionPlus. Thus far I’m impressed, especially when playing the basketball game. The controls are very responsive. Even with the simple play options in the pick-up game, it keeps me entertained and is easily my favorite. Wake boarding is not only challenging from a game play technical standpoint trying to execute all the water tricks for the highest score, but physically as well as you have to hold the remote out in front and move the boarder side to side. But who’d a thunk that flicking your wrist would be so hard to pull off when throwing a frisbee at a virtual dog playing catch.

Considering the Wii’s graphic power that was on display in titles like Punch Out!!! and Metroid Prime 3, it’s a little disappointing they did nothing to go beyond the original’s presentation or visual style here. Additionally, they make it clear that Resort is a game best enjoyed as a multi-player, yet gave us no online play. Considering how well they succeeded in taking Mario Kart online, the possibilities seem limitless with a online multi-player scoring and vs. play.

Nintendo’s Wii Sport franchise of games rarely disappoints when it comes to taking advantage of its motion sensing technology. Again, online play would greatly increase longevity of this title, but considering they show off the potential of their MotionPlus, it serves its purpose more than adequately. –A.K.

THQ has brought MMA to next-gen gaming in style. While the company is constantly dogged for its “stale” WWE Smackdown franchise, Undisputed captures the UFC fight experience almost perfectly.

The roster is huge, a few of name fighters include ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Brock Lesnar, Tito Ortiz, Chuck Liddell, Anderson Silva and Georges St.-Pierre — sadly, no Randy Couture. Gameplay and presentation wise, THQ nailed the UFC experience down. You have the fight screen, ring intros and even the two fighters meeting in the middle of the cage touching gloves. Depending on your opponent and his fight techniques (wrestling, boxing, brazilian jiu jitsu) the match will play out accordingly. You get a wrestler he’ll take you down in minutes, transition to a mount and knock you the f out. A kickboxer or Muay Thai fighter will keep you standing and try to pick you apart with precise strikes. While a BJJ guy looks for you to make mistake and submit you. I’ve knocked out Forrest Griffin and ‘Rampage’ Jackson in the first round with clinch knees, but got my ass handed to me by Wilson Gouveia’s kicking and BJJ, while Rashad Evans is a beast with his wrestling and ground and pound. While there are too many flash knock outs, it keeps with the realism of UFC. Hey, you gotta love those sick head kick that sends fighters twirling to the mat.

Controls for UFC Undisputed are nearly perfect although there is too much “hold L1 or R2” with a face buttons for the various attacks. Once you get the controls down it becomes much easier to dictate the fight. Blocking is choppy at times as you have two button to press to block head shots and body shots. Also, too many times when you’re blocking you end up taking extra strikes when you’re trying to back away and get some distance. Oh and there’s online playability. You’d be amazed at the amount of people who try to keep it standing and avoid the ground game. Step your game up people!

The bulk of the game is centered on career mode as you create a fighter and have him rise through the ranks in his weight division. When selecting striking and grappling disciplines, you can’t go wrong with Boxing, Kickboxing or Muay Thai as a striking base. However, Muay Thai gives you awesome clinch strikes that payoff with flash KO’s. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a grapple is nice for submission, but there are many throws and slams you get from Judo and Wrestling. Once your fighter is put together, you actually live the life of a UFC fighter, training, sparring, and taking fights. Quick tip: when training your fighter, build your cardio, then strength and speed. The tougher the fights get, the more you’ll need to avoid gassing out and having the energy to finish someone late in the fight. Another key is camp invites, since that’s how you level-up your fighter and learn new strikes (i.e. head kicks, superman punch) and grapples (those fly spine buster slams).

For it’s first game out with the UFC license, THQ hit a homerun. While online needs a few improvements and they need to tweek the submission system, Undisputed is damn close to a perfect adaptation of the UFC experience. –A.K.

Punch Out!!!!

Even with DS level graphics and glitch filled motion controls, Punch Out!!! is yet another winner for Nintendo.Punch Out is gimmicky because you’re supposed to use the Wii Balance board to dodge your opponent’s punches and actually punch back moving your hands but there is just too much to do with those controls. It’s bad enough you have to memorize which direction to dodge or completely duck out of the way of your opponent’s attack. Not to mention, you have to hold the Z button to throw that super uppercut or jerk your body left or right. Little kids may love doing this, but us competitive gamers just wanna whip some ass. Personally, I’d stick with the old skool NES controls with simple two button controls. Regardless it’s still Punch Out!!! and all old skool gamers are coping this for the fun factor alone.

Much like gamers did 20 years ago, you play as Little Mac whose coached by an uncanny looking Fat Albert doppelganger. Instead of giving helpful advice in the corner, dude is busy telling you his favorite candy bar. You pretty much fight through all 12 fighters in the minor, major, and world circuit before going one-on-one with Mr. Sandman. They really couldn’t get Mike Tyson to sign off on his likeness. Pretty sure they could’ve got it for cheap (editors note: I think EA pretty much squashed that fam). Once you dethrone the champ (surprisingly an easy task with well timed punches to counter his attacks) you then go back though the same characters again in title defense mode. This time everyone has new techniques that make the fights much harder –it took 10 fights to beat Glass Joe. If you’re skilled enough to make through this there’s yet another tour to go through with some of Nintendo’s famed characters. Once beaten the game’s replay value is low, as the two player mode is nearly as fun when you’re just playing as Little Mac. Why can’t we play with boss characters? And if Mario Kart was any indication, online play would have been great.

Nintendo’s motion sensing machine seems to always deliver a fun title. Maybe it’s because it’s made by, arguably, the greatest game publisher ever. Either way, the adjectiveless Punch Out!!! is another hit for the House of Mario.–A.K.
