Just in time for the back-to-school/holiday shopping season, Apple’s unleashed a slew of new iPod goodies for us techies out there.
Here’s all the info from Apple’s Fall 2010 event.
Apple TV

Apple finally updated there under utilized Apple TV. Now a streaming-focused device in a small, black, hockey puck design, it boast HDMI, Ethernet, optical audio, and USB outputs, and of course 802.11n for the cable-averse. Inside, Apple dumped the hard drive, instead you’ll be streaming everything from the Internet or your computer.

They hooked up with ABC and Fox to give owners new streaming HD TV rentals for a mere 99 cents, while first run HD movies will go for $4.99. Other services include Netflix, YouTube, Flickr, and Mobile Me, along with Rotten Tomatoes integration in the movie catalog. Apple will start shipping the new Apple TV in four weeks for $99.

iPod Touch

Apple has re-upped its “iPhone without the phone” to include the Retina Display already found in the iPhone 4, an Apple A4 core, 3-axis gyroscope, Game Center, and FaceTime support thanks to the addition of a front cam. Oh, and speaking of cams, it’s also got a rear, HD video capable cam. The new iPod Touch will be shipping to stores next week for $229 for 8GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB.
iPod Nano

Apple made another design change to 6th generation iPod nano. Gone is the clickwheel, instead replaced with a touch screen interface and a shuffle-esque square form factor. Hard volume buttons on the side and a clip on the back provide the bare minimal hardware accouterments to the multi-touch touch screen, while the inside provides enough juice for 24 hours of audio playback. The new Nano will be available in seven colors, including a Product RED option, with prices set at $149 for the 8GB model and $179 for 16GB.
iPod Shuffle
Apple re-designed the iPod shuffle, by bringing the buttons back, and providing up to 15 hours of battery life. Available in five colors, the redesigned iPod Shuffle will run you $49 and ships next week.
iOS 4.1

For all you iPhone owners out there, Apple didn’t forget about you, as they announced the iOS 4.1. The newest iOS boasts a number bug fixes including remedies for the proximity sensor issue, Bluetooth, and iPhone 3G performance, while the new features include High Dynamic Range photos, HD video uploads over WiFi, TV show rentals, and, at long last, Game Center. That latter bit is pretty much what we’ve been seeing all along, and boasts a range of new capabilities for multiplayer gaming including the ability to challenge friends, keep track of scores, and new ways to find games — of which there will be some pretty interesting new ones that take advantage of the added capabilities. The new iOS update should hit iTunes sometime next week as a free download for your iPhone or iPod Touch. –A. Kennedy
